Benalla West

The Benalla West project is part of the Big Housing Build with an investment of approximately $30 million, providing more than 45 new homes along with upgrades and improvements made to public spaces in the neighbourhood.

The new homes will be a mix of housing types, including social and affordable. Each home will have a private open space which will be  able to be adapted to suit the needs of the renters. Public open spaces will be upgraded and made safer, with new homes facing onto them, and new play facilities for children.

The design of the homes will be informed by the master plan and future community consultation.

Benalla West Draft Master Plan

Homes Victoria is also developing a master plan for the Benalla West neighbourhood. The master plan is a long-term vision that will guide development and growth in Benalla West. This includes:

Community consultation

Engagement is at the heart of the master planning process. We have consulted with stakeholders and the community throughout the project to understand their needs and to make sure that the master plan delivers the best possible outcomes for Benalla West.

In 2019 and 2020, we consulted with the community on future key directions for the Benalla West neighbourhood to help shape the draft master plan.

In late 2023, we asked community to provide feedback on the Benalla West draft master plan.

Some of the key themes we heard were that: 

• The community have a desire for good natural light, energy efficiency and private outdoor space.
• The community would like to see open and safe places for children to play, as well as picnic and sheltered areas.
• New connections will improve movement around the neighbourhood.
• Lighting is seen as key to people feeling safe.

Community committee

The Benalla West Estate Community Committee, established in February 2020, provides residents and community groups the opportunity to take part in the project and provide detailed feedback. The committee was established following an expression of interest process in late 2019.
