Award-winning architecture firm Architectus has been appointed as project lead on the redevelopment of the Carlton red brick public housing towers.
The project will provide Victorians with access to more and better homes, including 231 new homes - a 16% boost to public housing on the site.
Architectus is an Australian firm known for its public and community projects, including hospitals, schools and the Homes Victoria development at Markham Avenue, Ashburton, featuring 178 social and affordable homes.
The Carlton Red Bricks project will feature new apartments that are modern, accessible, and energy-efficient, and located near shops, parks, transport, and services.
When complete, former residents of the Carlton red brick towers will be invited to return to the new homes on the site.
These new homes will be delivered through a partnership between the Commonwealth and Victorian governments, and are part of the Commonwealth Government’s Social Housing Accelerator Program.
Homes Victoria CEO Simon Newport said a commitment to community engagement ensures the end result is a home of which “everyone can feel proud”.
“Our renter communities are strong and vibrant,” Mr Newport said.
"We are involving them in the redevelopment of housing towers across Melbourne by drawing on their lived experience and insights.
“We have already held several community workshops with renters and received hundreds of pieces of feedback.
“We’re also drafting our Community Values with the support of renters, neighbours and the broader community. These values will be our commitment to renters and guide how we work with them as we redevelop 21 housing precincts in Melbourne.”
