Homes Victoria is building homes for those who need them most and supporting local communities as we do it.
Homes Victoria aims to support local business wherever possible to create better outcomes for communities and projects.
SomChapati is a Flemington catering business run by Flemington renter Hodan.
SomChapati caters for meetings and events with healthy Somali food – always including her signature chapati.
Hodan recently provided food for some community workshops in Flemington and North Melbourne.
Hodan says that SomChapati allows her to not only share her food, but her culture.
“Growing up in a refugee camp, Chapati was more than just a meal—it was a lifeline,” she said.
“It was one of the few foods available, and it became a symbol of resilience and survival in the most challenging times of my life. As a child, I learned to perfect the art of making Chapati, not just for myself but for the other refugees who relied on it as their daily sustenance.”
“When I came to Australia, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunities I found here. Starting SomChapati is my way of giving back to the community that welcomed me. This business is not just about food; it’s about sharing my story, my culture, and my gratitude. It’s about connecting people through the comfort and warmth of a shared meal.”
Hodan says that opportunities to work with organisations like Homes Victoria helps celebrate her culture.
“SomChapati represents more than just food—it’s a celebration of community, culture, and resilience.
“These opportunities allow me to reach more people, not only to share the authentic flavours of African cuisine but also to tell a story of hope and perseverance. It helps me honour my past and build a future.”

About the High-Rise Redevelopment project
Community engagement workshops were held in North Melbourne and Flemington recently as part of the High-Rise Redevelopment project.
The project is Australia’s largest urban renewal project with a pipeline of projects between now and 2051.
It will transform Melbourne’s social housing neighbourhoods, replacing 44 ageing high-rises and other buildings with modern, accessible and energy efficient homes and improved community facilities.
Once completed, there will be at least 10% more social housing for Victorians who need it and more homes close to schools, services, transport and jobs.
