Ellie’s story: Peace and inspiration in Heidelberg West social housing

Posted on: 06/11/2024 - 2:12pm

Renters are settling into their new homes at the recently completed Tarakan Street housing redevelopment in Heidelberg West.

Ellie was among the first group of social housing renters to move into the revitalised housing site, which has transformed the area by replacing 60 older-style homes with 130 new homes.

She particularly enjoys the spacious layout, her private balcony, and the quality of her brand-new home.

“I love spending time on the balcony. In the mornings, I sit outside, paint, and listen to my music. It makes me feel good,” Ellie said.

As a painter and former writer, Ellie values the tranquillity of her new living space, as well as its location close to public transport, shops, and various services.

Since moving to Australia from Iran 13 years ago, Ellie has found solace in her art. The calm environment of her new home has been a source of inspiration and comfort. She’s also excited to host friends in her new space.

“I’m thrilled to be able to host guests and feel very comfortable living here,” she said.

“It’s very light, clean, new, modern, and has a beautiful balcony. It’s very peaceful.”

About Tarakan Street, Heidelberg West

The Tarakan Street redevelopment has delivered a 12% uplift in social housing at the site for the Heidelberg West community.

The development offers a variety of housing options with one, 2, and 3-bedroom homes, including 67 social homes and 63 affordable homes.

The project has breathed new life into the site. The redevelopment includes vibrant new outdoor spaces designed to enhance residents' quality of life.

These features include a beautifully landscaped terrace garden, a children's play area, modern barbecue facilities, and green open spaces where families and individuals can relax and socialise.

Homes Victoria in partnership with community housing organisation Uniting, has delivered this redevelopment.

Uniting will manage the social housing on the site on behalf of Homes Victoria for the next 30 years. They will provide tenancy and asset management services, as well as community development programs aimed at building a strong and connected community.

The Tarakan Street redevelopment is not just about providing new homes for people; it’s about creating a welcoming, supportive environment where residents can live, work and thrive.
