More and better homes for Wangaratta: Construction continues in regional Victoria

Homes Victoria is partnering with community housing organisation BeyondHousing to deliver new social housing in Wangaratta in Victoria’s north-east.

Beyond Housing is a not for profit organisation providing people with a pathway to home. They work with people who are experiencing homelessness and housing disadvantage.

The Big Housing Build project features three news homes and work is well underway.

Up to 20 different local trades have been involved in the construction of the one- and 2-bedroom homes which will be allocated to people on the Victorian Housing Register.

The homes are close to a scenic bike path and public transport.

What is social housing?

Social housing is short and long-term rental housing that is owned and run by the government or not-for-profit organisations.

Social housing is made up of two types of housing, public and community. Social housing is generally subsidised for people on low incomes who need housing, especially those who have recently experienced homelessness, family violence or have other special needs.

About the Big Housing Build

The Big Housing Build was announced in November 2020.

More than 10,000 homes have now been completed or are underway as part of the Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund.

The investment of more than $8 billion in social and affordable housing as part of the Big Housing Build and other programs is delivering safe, secure, and appropriate housing for Victorians in need, including young people, people with mental illness, victim survivors of family violence, Aboriginal Victorians and people living in regional Victoria.
