More and better homes coming to Wangaratta in 2025

Homes Victoria is partnering with community housing organisation Uniting Vic.Tas to deliver new social housing in Wangaratta in Victoria’s north-east.

Work is well underway on the Big Housing Build which will create 44 new homes by 2025. The project replaces ageing housing with safe, secure and architecturally-designed one-2 and 3-bedroom homes. These homes will be allocated to people on the Victorian Housing Register.

The homes span 4 storeys, and are located close to the Wangaratta city centre, public transport, supermarkets, and green spaces.

The development is sustainably designed by award-winning Jackson Clements Burrows Architects to integrate with the local environment and reflect the area’s character and heritage.

What is social housing?

Social housing is short and long-term rental housing that is owned and run by the government or not-for-profit organisations.

Social housing is made up of two types of housing, public housing and community housing. Social housing is generally subsidised for people on low incomes who need housing, especially those who have recently experienced homelessness, family violence or have other special needs.

About the Big Housing Build

The Big Housing Build was announced in November 2020.

More than 10,000 homes have now been completed or are underway.

The investment of more than $8 billion in social and affordable housing is delivering safe, secure, and appropriate housing for Victorians in need, including young people, people with mental illness, victim survivors of family violence, Aboriginal Victorians and people living in regional Victoria.
