About the relocation process

We know that moving can be challenging. That’s why our relocations team is there to support renters every step of the way to move into safe and secure, alternative accommodation. This includes homes in your neighbourhood.

Learning more

Renters that are not relocating in the near future, can start learning more about the process. Find out more about what's happening in other neighbourhoods, including new homes that are available to those renters.

Getting ready

Renters who are starting the relocations process should register for an in-person conversation with a relocations team member. You are not expected to move right away. Our priority is understanding your needs and preferences first, so we can find you a suitable property.

This includes your preferred location, and important things like:

  • Health and service and providers
  • Schools, childcare and employment
  • Accessibility needs
  • Social, cultural and community connections
  • Transport links and connections

You may have other things we need to know about, and your relocations appointment will help us understand how we can support you.

Fill out the form

Relocation appointments are not rushed and can be wherever you feel comfortable including in your home. You are welcome to bring family members, or other support services. We will also arrange an interpreter if you require one.

Once you have completed your paperwork, the relocations team will lodge your application and you will get a confirmation letter. The relocations team will then look for a home that meets your needs.

Relocating

For renters who are already relocating it is important you finalise your relocation housing application so we can match your household with a home that suits your needs, including homes available in your neighbourhood.

Once you receive a housing offer, you will get the chance to inspect the home and make sure that it is a good fit.

When you accept the offer the relocations team will work with your household to decide on a suitable moving day. Homes Victoria will book the removalists and cover all moving costs, including:

  • removalist fees
  • packing materials, e.g. tape, boxes
  • connections fees for utilities like electricity, gas, telephone, and internet
  • mail redirection costs, and
  • disposal of any items you don’t want to move to your new home.

On the agreed moving day, the removalist will take your packed belongings and furniture to your new home.

Staying connected and getting involved

We will keep you informed and involved in the planning for the redeveloped homes, as well as provide regular updates on progress and changes in your neighbourhood, especially if you plan to return.

You can also play a part in the design of new homes and neighbourhoods.

Coming back

The redevelopment will take between 6 and 8 years. Renters have the right to return to their current neighbourhood when the redevelopment is complete based on their ongoing eligibility, needs and suitability of the new homes.

Renters can also choose to stay in their new home if that suits them better, at the time.
