Here at Homes Victoria we are not only building homes, we are also building communities.
Recently, Homes Victoria partnered with Belgium Avenue Neighbourhood House (BANH) and Richmond Youth Hub to celebrate the diverse and vibrant community of the North Richmond housing site through a community-inspired artwork for the hoarding on the Big Housing Build project site at Elizabeth Street, Richmond, where we are building 144 modern, sustainably designed homes.
BANH teamed up with photographer Jorge de Araujo to take a series of portraits of Richmond residents sharing a favourite cultural meal and recipe, including Fatuma who shared her chapati recipe. Fatuma said chapati is a “delicious and popular flatbread in many parts of the world”.
“My Mum taught me this, as I am the oldest in the family, so I learnt cooking from her,” Fatuma said.
“Chapati you can have for morning, tea, lunch or dinner.
“In the olden days, people ate it when they were travelling, as it lasts a few days as it doesn’t have eggs. For vegetarian people, it’s the perfect food and without the cheese it’s also vegan.”
BANH also worked with Richmond Youth Hub and Yarra Youth Services Artist in Residence, visual artist Nicky Tsekouras, who led a series of workshops with Richmond young people to create self-portraits and drawings of their favourite foods.
You can visit the artwork around the perimeter of the Elizabeth Street, Richmond site and explore the recipes below:
About our partners
BANH operates neighbourhood houses on the Collingwood and North Richmond public housing sites. The houses are a friendly meeting place for the local community and guided by a community development framework they have a particular focus on using arts and culture as a tool for community development.
Richmond Youth Hub is coordinated by Yarra Youth Services and located on the North Richmond housing site. The Hub is a place where young people can connect to essential services, feel supported and are empowered to reach their full potential through social, recreational and educational programs.
