Regional Housing Fund: More and better homes for regional Victoria

More than $1 billion will be invested to deliver more than 1,300 social and affordable homes, including new and upgraded homes, across regional Victoria as part of the Regional Housing Fund.

The Regional Housing Fund will deliver homes across at least 30 regional and rural council areas with completion expected by 2028.

Homes Victoria CEO Simon Newport said the investment in regional and rural Victoria will deliver more and better homes in areas where they are needed most.

“The Regional Housing Fund will make a significant difference to Victorians in need as well as providing more affordable housing for rural and regional communities,” he said.

“We’re using a variety of methods to deliver the homes as quickly and efficiently as possible, such as modern methods of construction, upgrading existing homes, spot purchasing and through partnerships with the community housing sector.”

Work is already underway, with at least 180 new and upgraded homes already completed. This includes the purchase of 50 transitional housing homes and more than 134 existing social housing homes upgraded and back online for renters.

Work is also progressing on a number of projects already announced under the fund –in Colac and Wodonga and flood-affected communities of Rochester, Seymour and Shepparton.

As part of the fund, at least 130 new homes will be allocated to housing for First Nations Victorians and this work will be guided by the principles of self-determination.

There will also be more homes for priority social housing applicants, women and children escaping family violence, young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, key workers as well as displaced communities dealing with the ongoing impacts of flood.

Consultation with Regional Partnerships, including local councils and key representatives, provided local insights on priority groups and the mix of housing types and locations. Conversations with local communities will continue as projects in each region progress.

The Regional Housing Fund is on top of the $1.25 billion we’re already investing in our regions through the Big Housing Build
