New homes with support for young people with a disability will soon be completed in Reservoir in Melbourne’s north.
Perry House is a long-standing residential-based living skills program that provides the support and stability to young people with intellectual disabilities at risk of homelessness.
Operated by Jesuit Social Services, the program helps residents build the skills to live independently and connect them to ongoing support.
The new Perry House will provide support for up to 12 young people and has all new self-contained bedrooms providing stable accommodation.
These innovative homes were constructed using modern methods, meaning the homes could be delivered faster, beginning to end.
The homes are being built as part of the Big Housing Build, part of which is delivering youth housing projects across Victoria, including Wondonga, Wangaratta, Werribee, Shepparton, Mildura, Frankston, Bairnsdale and South Morang.
Homes Victoria CEO Simon Newport said the new homes would help young people with a disability receive the stability and support to build independent living skills and transition back to the community.
“Perry House has a long history of supporting young people with a disability to build new skills and a brighter future,” Mr Newport said.
The program gives residents aged 17-25 years of age tailored individual support based on their needs including access to education, training, employment, and other wrap around supports. The facility will also include a communal kitchen, dining and living areas and staff quarters.
“This is great example of what can be achieved by working together to deliver more and better housing for young people with a disability,” he said.
“Supported accommodation for young people with a disability is in high demand, and the new Perry House will help more young people find a home and give them the support they need to live their best life.”
