Homes Victoria is partnering with Mallee Accommodation and Support Program (MASP) to build more and better social housing in regional Victoria as a part of the Big Housing Build.
MASP is a not-for-profit organisation that offers support services to people living in the Mallee region, including housing and homelessness support.
They have two new social housing projects underway in Mildura’s CBD, providing four new homes for local families.
Charmaine Calis, Acting CEO of MASP, said that the development sites previously housed out-of-date homes that were no longer fit for purpose.
“There is a really low vacancy rate in Mildura, which creates a competitive rental market.”
“Social housing provides an important foundation for those in the community that need support.”
The projects also employ local trades, helping to give back to the community.
MASP Asset Manager Nicole Jamieson said that it is important to develop housing that understands the needs of the local community.
“Here in Mildura, we have a hot, dry climate. These homes are designed to modern standards and will keep renters cool and comfortable throughout the harsh Mildura summer.”
What is social housing?
Social housing is an umbrella term that includes both public housing and community housing.
Social housing refers to low-cost rental housing available to people on low incomes, or who face other barriers to securing suitable housing.
Public housing is housing owned and managed by Homes Victoria on behalf of the state government.
Community housing is managed by not-for-profit community housing organisations.
